Laurent Barth Riesling Rebgarten 2006
Laurent Barth is leading the way for natural winemaking in Alsace, and this Riesling demonstrates how well this grape can show with no manipulation. Dry, with a lot of power and elegance.
Notes from the Importer:
"Laurent ferments everything in 30-40 year old fuders under oxygen locks with no yeasts, enzymes, temperature manipulations or anything else except that one key ingredient a winemaker HAS to add: PATIENCE. In May, and even in June of the year following a harvest, his wines are still fermenting.
Let’s start a new paragraph here to talk about this 2006 Riesling, which is wild and exotic but HUGELY intense, with a layer of lime, another of earth, and then five or six more that unfold in the course of even a single sip.
Body? The most you’ll find this side of a certain domaine in Turckheim.
Intensity? Even in Turckheim I think they’d have to be impressed.
Sheer hedonistic excitation? This wine will SHIVER your timbers.
But it isn’t ONLY a shiverer of timbers and a buster of blocks. It is also a beautifully balanced, and even elegant wine that, as good as it is at first blush, is even better at the end of a second glass.
(No additional ageing is required, by the way. The nine month fermentation took care of that. But if you want to keep it for a while I’m SURE you won’t have to worry about how it will keep.)
This is Riesling like you’ve probably never experienced it. Please don’t attempt to taste it when you need to be able to think about anything else."
